In 2010 Citizens United v. FEC declared that money was protected speech, which has funded politicians responsible for appointing members of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Social media has especially benefitted from this wild west climate to the point where a data scientist whistleblower, who used to work for Facebook, recently said that despite their claim that they have invested in monitoring harmful content, “. . . it chooses profit over safety.”
