Not only did Citizens United v. FEC give corporations the right to “speak” with their unlimited cash, but now these corporate “persons” are banding together in organizations such as the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) to promote a right-wing agenda. As a nonprofit, ALEC is not required to disclose its donors’ identities to the public. And although they claimed to back away from social issues after the donor crisis and member exodus in 2012, they are back at it giving virtual workshops to legislators as well as corporations on what the right-wing thinks will be a wedge issue in 2022: critical race theory. This may be coming soon to a school near you.
