The simple answer is MONEY. Huge unregulated amounts of it pouring in from outside sources including corporations, unions, and a myriad of special interest groups or Super PACs, where donors are secret.

Our representative democracy is rapidly becoming unrepresentative, with power concentrated in the hands of a wealthy few. Their dollars give them more access than our votes.

The Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United ruling further exacerbated this growing problem by throwing out the McCain-Feingold regulations that had been keeping some kind of control. Now corporations are given constitutional rights instead of being the legal entities they actually are. Congress does not need to work across the aisle, just satisfy their big-dollar donor.
