The simple answer is MONEY. Huge unregulated amounts of it pouring in from outside sources including corporations, unions, and a myriad of special interest groups or Super PACs, where donors are secret.
Our representative democracy is rapidly becoming unrepresentative, with power concentrated in the hands of a wealthy few. Their dollars give them more access than our votes.
The Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United ruling further exacerbated this growing problem by throwing out the McCain-Feingold regulations that had been keeping some kind of control. Now corporations are given constitutional rights instead of being the legal entities they actually are. Congress does not need to work across the aisle, just satisfy their big-dollar donor.
Reverse Citizens United is a Bloomington-based group of concerned citizens working hard for the passage of a constitutional amendment which would reverse this Supreme Court’s ruling and return our democracy to as it was originally intended by our Founders…a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
