Move To Amend-South Central Indiana:
A Brief History

In the wake of the Citizens United decision in 2010 by the Supreme Court of
the United States, we convened a series of public meetings that were well attended
by area citizens concerned about the expected flood of money into federal election
campaigns. Out of those meetings came an informal organization, with neither
officers nor bylaws, that gradually coalesced around a common goal, a
constitutional amendment to declare that corporations are not entitled to the same
constitutional protections as humans, and that money is not equivalent to political
speech.
As we reviewed several national organizations we found one, Move To
Amend, that embraced the same goal. After some discussion, our members voted
to become an affiliate that we chose to call Move To Amend-South Central Indiana.
Over the next few years this non-partisan group created or sponsored several
activities, both here and in other communities, in pursuit of our goal: plays,
petitions, speakers, films, letters and guest editorials, parade entries, panel
discussions, and debates.
Suddenly the national leadership of Move To Amend informed us of a
broader set of goals that affiliates must embrace if they wished to continue under
the aegis of Move To Amend. As an overwhelming majority of our members
displayed no enthusiasm for this departure from our original focus, or the additional
investment to be required in time, effort, and conference calls, we decided to drop
our affiliation with Move To Amend. In keeping with our beginnings, and after
considerable discussion, our members now call their organization Reverse
Citizens United. Under that name we will continue to pursue constitutional
amendment, in unison with other groups sympathetic to our aims.
