Abuse of Power in Raid against Kansas Newspaper: Are We Paying Attention?

With our politics awash in contributions unleashed by the Supreme Court of the United States when they said money was protected free speech, Judges, sheriffs, and state law enforcement can be staffed with people who do not understand freedom of the press.

In August 2023 the police raided a Kansas newspaper The Marion County Record. The paper had
uncovered a drunk driving charge for a restaurant owner Kari Newell and she was given a heads up by by her close friend and the town’s relatively new Chief of Police Gideon Cody. Cody got a warrant from a judge, involved the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. “The number of legal guardrails authorities blew through Aug. 11 in their quest to seize computers and terrorize, intentionally or not, the publishers and staff of the Record should be of concern to anyone who cares about democracy.”
