Obamacare’s Unexpected Success

Since it’s passage the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been under assault by Republicans and their conservative allies. Millions of dollars in “dark money” have been spent in order to repeal it. One example was the joint effort of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America known as PhRMA and the American Action Network.(AAN) AAN spent a total of $10 million dollars on an ad campaign to convince voters to support the ACA’s elimination. PhRMA was one of ANA’s biggest donors contributing $6.1 million dollars.

The conservative-leaning AAN is one of the most prominent nonprofits for routing dark money — difficult-to-trace funds behind TV ads, phone calls, grass-roots organizing and other investments used to influence politics. Such groups have thrived since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision in 2010, which opened the flood gates for corporate political spending. But in this instance, it seems that even unlimited dollars haven’t had the impact that PACS may have intended. Obomacare is now more popular than ever.
